AMERICAN REVOLUTION]. MARION, Francis ("The Swamp Fox") (1732?-1795), partisan commander. Autograph letter signed (Fran s Marion.") TO GENERAL NATHANIEL GREENE, St. Stephens, 17 September 1781. 1 full page, 4to, integral address leaf marked "Public service," endorsed by Greene. Letter with rectangular patch in margin, several smaller on address leaf , otherwise in very good condition. BOLDLY SIGNED TRACKING THE ENEMY IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE BATTLE OF EUTAW SPRINGS Just two weeks earlier, an American army commanded by Nathaniel Greene and including South Carolinia partisans, surprised and severely mauled a large British garrison at Eutaw Springs on the Santee River. "At the peak of his career, in his greatest battle, commanding the largest contingent of troops in his life, he had seen the men he had trained fight like professionals" (R.D. Bass, Swamp Fox ). Marion had then led his force to a temporary bivouac at St. Stephens. Here, he passes on important intelligence regarding the enemy's movements: "Yesterday at Eleven O'clock the Enemy came up and took their old post at Eutaw. It appears they have collected their whole force; I am of Opinion that this movement is only a Bravado, for they cannot subsist long in that place, especially if I had men sufficient to Intercept their Supply from the Corner, & prevent them from foraging. If they should take post at Murray's ferry in St. Stephens they may subsist a long time, as there is a great Quantity of Old Corn & large fields [for grazing]; the loss of which will be the greatest hurt to our future Operations..." In a postscript, Marion adds: "Col. Maham [American dragoon commander] is on the North Side of Santee [river].".
