The Prime Minister prepares for the impending peace with the United States of America: THE PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES THE TREATY OF PARIS AND A CEASE FIRE TO THE FOREMOST HESSIAN OFFICER A remarkable letter of state to Riedesel, the ranking Hessian officer in North America, who had been captured (with his wife and three children) when Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga in 1777 and exchanged in 1780. At this date Riedesel was stationed in Canada. North informs him that "the provisional Articles of a Treaty of Peace having been agreed upon between His Majesty and the United States of America, and it being intended to abstain from all offensive Operations in Canada; I have the King's Commands to acquaint you, that Instructions have been sent to Governor [Frederick] Haldimand [of Canada], to make the necessary preparations for your Return to Europe with the Troops of His Serene Highness the Prince of Brunswick. The King has further commanded me to signify to you that during your Residence in Canada, he has received the most honorable testimonies of your merit and services, and of the sprited behaviour of your Officers and Men..." In August 1783, a month before the final peace treaty was signed, Riedesel and his family sailed from Quebec; in London they were received by George III and then returned to the principality of Brunswick, which they had left in April 1776.
