American School, 19th Century, SHIP KONOHASSETT, J. FOSTER LEAVING THE PORT OF OSTEND, 1843. Signed "L.T." l.r. Reverse painting on glass, 21 x 29 1/2 in., in likely original mahogany veneer frame. Condition: Scattered paint losses in water area. Note: According to typewritten notes affixed on the reverse, the Konohassett was an approximately 420 ton American whaling vessel. She was built in the town of her namesake, Cohassett, Massachusetts. In 1843 she was commanded by Captain Jonathan Foster of Brewster, Massachusetts. In 1846 she hunted in the Northwestern Kodiak grounds, stopped in Hawaii at Maui for fresh food and water on the way south, and was wrecked at Pell's Island, (possibly Peel's Island at the southerly tip of Japan), May 24, 1846. The port of Ostend where this scene was taken is situated in the North Sea on the Belgian coast.
