An 18-inch W & T M Bardin terrestrial globe on stand English, early 19th century,cartouche printed To the Rt. Honorable/ SIR JOSEPH BANKS BAR. K. B./ President of the Royal Society/ This New British Terrestrial Globe/ Containing all the latest Discoveries and Communications, from the most / correct and authentic Observations and Surveys, to the year 1799/ by Captn. Cook and more recent Navigators. Engraved from/ an accurate Drawing by Mr. Arrowsmith, Geographer/ Additions to 1807 / Respectfully Dedicated / by his most obedient hble. Servants / W. & T.M. Bardin mounted in brass meridian within horizon ring applied with facsimile printed calendar and zodiac scale, supported by four brackets above tripod base with castors and stretcher centred by a magnetic compass rose
42 by 22 in (107 by 56cm) FootnotesWilliam Bardin (fl.1783-98) began making globes in about 1780 in association with Gabriel Wright. Thomas Marriott jointed his father's firm in 1790 in the partnership W & T M Bardin and in about 1798 the globe production was extended to include 18-inch terrestrial and celestial globes. These New British globes were subsequently sold by S S Etkins, T M Bardin's son in law following his death in 1819.
John Arrowsmith (1790-1873) was a cartographer and one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society.
