Four stipple-engraved plates, three printed in color, and one other plate, engraved by Charles Turner; one woodcut illustration in text. (4to) 28x21.5 cm (11x8½") period boards with modern cloth rebacking. First Edition. Considered the first modern work on Plastic Surgery, and among the rarest, describing the account of the first rhinoplasty operations performed in modern Europe by Joseph Carpue utilizing the 'Hindu' technique which employs a flap taken from the forehead for the reconstruction. With historical descriptions of this method and the method of the Italian surgeon Tagliacozzi in the 16th Century. Carpue began his surgical studies at St. George's Hospital in London in 1796 after being educated in France and traveling widely in Europe, Scotland, and Wales. He was appointed to the surgical staff of the Duke of York's Hospital in Chelsea in 1799 and a year later began teaching anatomy. Garrison-Morton 5737; Waller 1781; Wellcome II, p. 304. Lot Amendments Condition: Boards worn, rebacked, endpapers renewed; some light foxing, soiling, and wear to contents, creasing to a few leaves at front; very good. Item number: 290042
