Bob Fitzsimmons became the third world heavyweight boxing champion in history when defeating Jim Corbett (see previous lot) in New Orleans on 17 March 1897. In the process the Cornishman also became Britain's first heavyweight champion, albeit he and his family had emigrated to New Zealand when Fitzsimmons was nine years of age. "Ruby Robert" then became an American citizen in 1898 and remained champ until defeated by James L. Jeffries (see next lot) in 1899.. Fitzsimmons other legacy is that he was the first boxer to hold world titles in three weight divisions during his career.
