Gunnis, Dictionary of British Sculptors , London, 1951, "The busts of Warren Hastings included two in 'different drapery' and another in Roman drapery executed in marble for the late Marquis of Lansdowne...The original terra-cotta busts of Warren Hastings and Mr. Schroeter belonged to William Tassie and were lots 207 and 208 in his sale held by Mr. Christie in 12 July, 1805," pg. 39" The present bronze appears to have been cast from the marble made for the Marquis of Lansdowne because of the dress of the sitter, as well as the technical aspects of the cast.
