An exhibition standard 5 inch gauge historic model of a North Western Railway Crampton 2-2-2-2 locomotive with tender ‘Liverpool’, the boiler being lagged and finished in plate-work. Fittings including Salter’s type twin safety valves, sight-glass and pressure gauge not present, direction control lever. Chassis details include twin outside cylinders with metal cladding and having polished brass capping. Stephenson’s reverse valve gear, leaf springs to front and rear axles, lubricator, wooden buffers on metal, wooden beams and other original detailed features. Six wheel tender with detailed rivet-work and water cocks. The model finished in green and black lined North Western Railway livery with brass plaque ‘Crampton Patent’ Bury Curtis & Kennedy Engineers Liverpool. No 355’ fitted steps, hand-irons, lamp irons with lamps, brightwork and polished copper chimney cap. Length 158cm. Cab Width 32cm. Height to top of chimney 37cm. The model mounted on display track with plinth concealing motorised drive for display purposes. * This locomotive would appear to have never been steamed and it is our opinion that the model was built for display purposes to a very high standard. * The full size Crampton type locomotive was introduced in 1846 by Thomas Crampton and used extensively in Europe until the end of the 19th Century and were most successful on the fast and light expresses of that period.
