An extremely finely detailed exhibition standard 1:384 scale rigged model of the U.S. Merchant Brig 'Volante' built by J.A.Evans --3½ x 5in (9 x 12.7cm). With masts, spars with foot ropes, standing and running rigging and deck details including anchors, rope coils, bilge pump, companionways, hatches, deck houses, belaying rails, ship's wheel and ship's boat with thwarts and oars. The hull, copper plated to the waterline and with planked bulwarks and decking is finished in black, white and grey. Mounted on two turned brass columns. Glazed case. The brig 'Volante' was built in 1853 in the yard of William Webb New York. She was engaged in the New York-Mediterranean trade until April 1862, then dropping from records. In 1875 she was registered in Buenos Aires and remained so beyond 1882. This model was awarded Silver Medal M.E. Exhibition, London 1993. See illustration
