Ridley Martin Hall, who was born in March 1898, transferred from the Northumberland Fusiliers to the Indian Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in June 1918, so his earlier service in France and Belgium between May and July 1917 - during which he was wounded - was presumably in a battalion of the former corps. More certain is the fact he joined a Signalling Company of the I.A. and witnessed extensive active service on the North West Frontier over the next few years, in Afghanistan, Waziristan and Mohmand country. Having been advanced to Captain in April 1923, Hall elected to transfer to the Indian Police in October of the same year, and was appointed an Assistant District Superintendent in Burma. Advanced to Officiating District Superintendent in March 1931, during the course of the Burma operations that led to a fifth clasp being added to his India General Service Medal, he went on to win the rare distinction of the Burma Police Medal in 1938. During the 1939-45 War Hall served as a Major in the Burma Intelligence Corps and was mentioned in despatches in the London Gazette of 9 May 1946 (accompanying original M.I.D. certificate refers); also sold with a fine quality studio portrait photograph.
