Taken shortly after his return, Grant actually visited New Orleans on April 6, after a swing through Galveston, Texas a few days earlier. In June, Grant lost the Republican presidential nomination to James A. Garfield. This view shows Canal Street filled with backed-up streetcars waiting for a huge crowd to disperse.
