Beschreibung:

An important cricket bat, a collection of autographs, all on a late 19th-century Gunn and Moore cricket bat, autographed by numerous important players, W. G. Grace, Sir Donald Bradman, Prince Ranjitsinhji, Gunn brothers, also containing among the many sigantures some from the famous touring Philadelphia club. The bat has been heavily varnished over the years and thus is rather hard to read in places. Perhaps the most interesting signatures are those belonging to the famous 'Philadelphians', among the names are those of Lester, Clark and Bohlen. Philadelphia, the major centre of cricket in the United States of America from the 1870's to the beginning of World War I, housed the only major domestic competitive cricket trophy in the States (Halifax Cup). The standard improved to the point where the club felt able to send a touring team to England in 1884. The funding for this tour was raised by a committee, and the itinerary included only amateur teams such as the Gentleman of the MCC. All told the club undertook five tours in total: 1884, 1888, 1897, 1903 and finally in 1908. The last three tours included first class opposition.
