AN ITALIAN PIETRA DURA TABLE TOP Late 17th Century, probably Florentine, reframed and reused as a table top in the 19th Century, on an English simulated Portor marble mahogany base, early 19th Century The rectangular top inlaid with various hard stones, including lapis lazuli, tigrano , alabastro fiorito , alabastro a tartaruga , broccatello, giallo antico and rosso antico as well as mother-of-pearl on a black slate background, depicting three canopied tents, each with a coat-of-arms and a military trophies, crowned by a Papal tiara, the arms of the Venetian republic with the lion of St. Marks holding open a book inscribed 'M NGE LIST DIEU', and surrounded by scrolling foliage entwined to the corners with animals and plants, including a dolphin, a salamander, a peacock and a tiger, representing the four elements, inscribed and dated 'SACRVM FOEDVS' and 'MDCLXXXIV', the mahogany base decorated in imitation of portor marble, with a square-sectioned baluster support terminating in a concave shaped plinth with lion's paw feet and inset castors, minor losses 30¼ in. (77 cm.) high; 53 in. (135 cm.) wide; 27½ in. (70 cm.) deep
