Andreas Feininger (American, 1906-1999) The Gyro, Coney Island, 1949. Titled in pencil and stamped "LIFE PHOTO/BY/ANDREAS FEININGER/JUN 12 1949" in ink on verso. Glossy gelatin silver print, 10 5/8 x 13 1/2 in. (27.0 x 34.3 cm), matted, unframed. Condition: Unmounted, handling creases and cracks in emulsion at corners, one handling crimp in u.l. quadrant and three crimps in u.r. quadrant. Provenance: From the private collection of György Kepes N.B. Andreas Feininger is perhaps best known for his photographs of New York City made in the 1940s and 1950s. Like his father, the artist Lyonel Feininger Andreas also used photography as a tool for capturing the effects of light as this series of three images of Coney Island rides at night demonstrates (Lots 163-165).
