Catalogue Essay Through variation, Warhol's work during the 1980s attests to his individual strategy and creativity. Recognizing and even glorifying his reuse of images, Warhol writes: "Even when the subject is different, people always want to paint the same painting." To Warhol the modifications made in each of his works through differing colour, size, or style do not denote his works to be less original. The present lot is an example of Warhol's later series of the Campbell's Soup image and how despite the reliance on a familiar image the end product is always different. Warhol's subjectivity is able to change over time making the present lot as refreshing as it is iconic to Warhol's breath of work. "The eighties was a very productive time for Andy artistically...He was not too afraid to do what he wanted to do, even as he was reprimanded for being too social, too commercial, or too mainstream. Following an early career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol achieved fame with his revolutionary series of silkscreened prints and paintings of familiar objects, such as Campbell's soup tins, and celebrities, such as Marilyn Monroe Obsessed with popular culture, celebrity and advertising, Warhol created his slick, seemingly mass-produced images of everyday subject matter from his famed Factory studio in New York City. His use of mechanical methods of reproduction, notably the commercial technique of silk screening, wholly revolutionized art-making. Working as an artist, but also director and producer, Warhol produced a number of avant-garde films in addition to managing the experimental rock band The Velvet Underground and founding Interview magazine.
