Beschreibung:

Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson, known as Girodet,
French 1767-1824-
The Revolt at Cairo;
black chalk on tracing paper, signed 'Girodet Trioson' (lower right), 29.1 x 41.3 cm.
Provenance:
With the Shepherd Gallery, New York, where purchased by the current owner in the 1990s.
Private Collection.
Note:
Girodet was a pupil of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), with David's Neoclassical approach also evident in Girodet's highly-ordered, detailed, yet theatrical compositions, with David's 'Rape of the Sabines' [Louvre INV 3691 ; L 3710], for example, showing compositional similarities to the present drawing.
The present work is one of many studies for the artist's completed painting of 'The Revolt at Cairo', commissioned by Napoleon (1769-1821) in 1809, and now in the Chateau de Versailles [MV 1497]. An earlier, less detailed sketch is currently on loan to the Metropolitan Museum in New York from a Private Collection, while another is in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art [2008.372].
