Engraved map of Piedmont on a single Royal sheet, 510 x 400mm. Title in strapwork cartouche, rivers, mountains, coastline, settlements and cardinal points are included. (Trimmed to image, some light staining.) A STRONG DARK AND EARLY IMPRESSION of this fine map of Piedmont. The map was also explicitly sold by Lafreri, who added his imprint 'Antonio Lafreri formis Romae 1564' in the copperplate and, according to Almagià, it is highly probable that this map is the one titled 'Piemonte' in the catalogue of Lafreri's maps. The map is related to, but not a copy of, Battista Agnese's map of 1553 now in the Museo Correr in Venice. They have a common unknown origin, but in Lafreri's map the Ligurian coast as well as valleys and mountains have been improved and names have been added or corrected. Light lettering, in the plate prior to engraving proper, can still be seen in several places, and presumably guided or instructed the engraver. The name of Carru has been ommitted. Tooley 446, listing 20 impressions and acknowledging Almagià's attribution and dating; Nordenskiöld 130, 38; watermark similar to Woodward 208.
