(Some offsetting of text onto plates, tears to two folding maps, one map and one plate shaved with slight loss.) Contemporary diced russia gilt (rebacked, old label laid down). Provenance : Sir John Barnard (1685-1764, signature on title). FIRST EDITION, subscriber's copy, describing Anson's voyage in the Centurion. The reasons for undertaking the voyage were warlike: Anson was under orders to attack Spanish possessions in the Pacific, and the work includes a description of the capture of the Spanish Manilla-to-Acapulco treasure galleon on 20 June 1743. Anson's share of the £500,000 treasure made him independently wealthy. Sabin 1625.
