APIANUS, Petrus (1495-1552). Cosmographia , edited by Regnier Gemma Frisius (1508-1555). Antwerp: Giles Coppenius for Arnold Berckmann, 1540.
APIANUS, Petrus (1495-1552). Cosmographia , edited by Regnier Gemma Frisius (1508-1555). Antwerp: Giles Coppenius for Arnold Berckmann, 1540. 2 parts in one vol., 4° (230 x 155mm), woodcut globe on title, 51 woodcut illustrations and diagrams, 5 with volvelles, woodcut historiated initials and publisher's device at end. (Lightly browned and waterstained, rust stain affecting margin of title and first two quires, volvelle on M1r possibly lacking a small part.) Old pasteboard (spine rubbed). After its first publication in 1524, Peter Apian's work next appeared in 1529 in an improved edition by his student, Gemma Frisius. Providing a layman's introduction to astronomy, geography, cartography, surveying, navigation and mathematical instruments, it became one of the most popular texts of its day, and acted as an outstanding advertisement for the wares in Gemma's instrument shop. Importantly, it described America in part 2, dating the discovery 1497 and stating that Amerigo Vespucci gave the continent his name. In this edition, Gemma's account of Peru and the expedition of 1530 follows. Two further tracts by him, on triangulation methods and the uses of astronomy, are dated Antwerp, 1533. Volvelles are found on C2v, C3v, D1v, H1r and M1r. America is shown on A3v (altered from the first edition to show two disconnected continents) and H1r. Fairfax Murray German 40; Sabin 1745.
