APOLLINAIRE, GUILLAUME Calligrammes. Poèmes de la paix et de la guerre 1913-1916 . Paris: Mercure de France, 1918. First edition, stamp-numbered 512 from the unstated regular edition. Original wrappers. 9 x 5 1/2 inches (22.5 x 14 cm); [205], [1] pp., with frontispiece by Picasso engraved by R. Jaudon. Light wear to binding, a few nominal stains, browned as usual internally (the paper used was poor). Old ownership stamp to the inside of the front cover. Apollinaire (born Wilhelm Albert Wlodzimierz Apolinary Kostrowicki) is generally considered to have coined the word "Cubism." Portions of his work foreshadowed the Surrealists (a term he also coined, first used in his program notes for Jean Cocteau's and Erik Satie's ballet Parade. Badly injured and weakened by shrapnel in World War I, he died of influenza the year this volume (his third work of verse) was published. It is famous for its concrete poetry, intermingled with modernist poems reflecting his experiences during the war. He is an enduring influence on French modernist art and letters. C
