[Apollo 8] Earth, the Blue Planet, during the first return journey from another world. William Anders, Frank Borman, or James Lovell 21–27 December 1968. Printed 1968. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper [NASA image AS8–15-2559]. 25,4×20,3 cm (10×8 in), with "A Kodak Paper“ watermarks on the verso (NASA / North American Rockwell, Downey, California). Literature: The view from space, Schick and Van Haaften, p. 95. Our Home Planet floating in the dark void of space. Getting back to that bright blue Earth from the Moon meant traversing 205,000 nautical miles of space. The photograph was taken with the 250mm telephoto lens from about 140,000 nautical miles away. “The Earth [...] captured my attention. It was the only object in the universe that we could see that had color. It was beautiful, blue with white clouds, serene and majestic. It was home.” Frank Borman (Jacobs, p. 34). “Photography brought home the real meaning of our space activity, a grasp of what we can accomplish, and a view of the Earth as it really is: a small planet in a common type of planetary system around a rather normal, nondescript star.” James Lovell (Schick and Van Haaften, p. 54). From the mission transcript on the way back to Earth (photograph taken at T+114:15:00 after launch): 112:26:18 Borman: Well, the old Earth is getting bigger. 112:26:20 Mattingly (Mission Control): Good show. Going in the right direction, then. [...] 114:06:00 Public Affairs Officer (Mission Control): This is Apollo Control at 114 hours, 6 minutes. At the present time, our spacecraft is traveling at a speed of 4,817 feet per second [1,468 m/s] and our altitude now above the Earth is 140,780 nautical miles [260,727 km]. We have had very small amount of communications with the crew since our last report. We will ... stand by for any further conversations that develop. Condition Please notice: Additional illustrative material shown in connection with the photograph(s) offered for sale is not included in the lot. Very minor softening to bottom corners, otherwise glossy print in excellent condition.
