Beschreibung:

APOLLO PHOTO ALBUM: AS-201 RECOVERY BY U.S.S. BOXER.Photo album containing 16 silver gelatin print photographs, February 26, 1966, each 4 x 5 inches (101 x 128 mm), in comb-bound album with upper cover reading: "U.S.S. Boxer / LPH 4 / Apollo Recovery / Shellback Ceremony / February 1966."
Rare photo album documenting the recovery of the first uncrewed test flight of an entire complete Block 1 Apollo Command and Service Module, which was carried by a Saturn IB launch vehicle. The flight was an important early step in the Apollo program with its objectives set to demonstrate the Saturn IB launch vehicle propulsion, guidance and electrical systems; demonstrate the structural compatibility between the launch vehicle and the CSM; demonstrate appropriate separation of all vehicle elements; demonstrate the CSM's heat shield, service propulsion system, CM and SM reaction control systems, environmental control of cabin pressure and temperature, partial communications, stability and control, Earth landing system and electrical power subsystem; evaluate the Emergency Detection System in an open-loop configuration; demonstrate the CM heat shield ablator at a 200 BTU/ft2/sec heat transfer rate; and demonstrate support facilities launch, mission control and recovery.
The present album details the final objective with images of the Navy Frogmen at work with Command Module 200 miles east of Ascension Island in the Atlantic, the spacecraft being hoisted aboard the ship and closeups of the capsule.
