Paris: Jean-Francois Robustel, 1745. 2° (635 x 485 mm). Engraved frontispiece of Neptune by J.B. Tilliard after F. Boucher, title printed in red and black with woodcut vignette, engraved head-piece on first text leaf, 25 engraved coastal charts and profiles (11 double-page). (Some light marginal browning or staining.) 18th-century green vellum (rebacked, parts of old spine laid down). Provenance : Louis Guillaume de Villevault (fl. 1759-1767) French King's Commissioner to the Compagnie des Indes (armorial bookplate). [ With :] Supplement au Neptune Oriental . Paris: Demonville, and Brest: Malassis, 1781. 2° (549 x 408 mm). Woodcut royal arms on title, 18 engraved maps (10 double-page). (Map 8 with 1-in. hole affecting image, some minor marginal staining.) 18th-century green vellum (rebacked, corners repaired, some rubbing). Provenance : Antiquariaat Menno Hertzberger (book seller’s label); F.E. Lauber (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, “A vast, superb volume” (Lust). A very important atlas compiled for the French East India Company. “The French Admiralty considering that the Neptune Oriental was too dangerous for ... navigation, ordered the remaining copies to be destroyed” (Manonmani Filliozat, Indian Journal of History of Science , 292, 1994, p. 341). Apres de Mannevillette, French astronomer and hydrographer was born in Le Havre to a sea-faring family. “He first sailed to India in 1719 in the Solide , captained by his father. He later studied geometry and astronomy under Joseph Nicholas Delisle, the mathematician and geographer, and at the age of nineteen sailed to the Caribean.
