The binding comes from a workshop attributed to Siena by Anthony Hobson who lists 23 similar known bindings (of which at least three are in the Brooker collection, an Aldine Cicero of 1513 (lot 300) and an Aldine Aulus Gellius of 1515; see also lot 132, Appianus). He describes the shape of the double gilt fillet frame as the main identifying feature, and all the bindings are dark-colored goatskin over pasteboard. The workshop was active from the 1520s to the 1540s. Three of the known bindings have the ownership inscription of Alessandro Guglielmi (1501-1562), a Sienese ambassador, so it is quite plausible that they were all commissioned by him; a fourth contains an inscription by his cousin Scipione.
Alessandro Guglielmi was known to both Claudio Tolomei (the creator of the Grimaldi library) and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, who was Spanish ambassador to Siena from 1547 to 1551.
This copy has the title-page in the second state, with the text on 18 lines and the correct spelling "Tropiensis". For a copy with the incorrect wording, see lot 138.

binding: Contemporary Sienese morocco gilt over thin wooden boards (160 x 100 mm), plausibly commissioned by Alessandro Guglielmi, double interlaced gilt fillet border with lettering seemingly erased from center of upper cover and replaced with decorative gilt tooling, spine blind-ruled in compartments, edges gilt and gauffered to a knotwork design, stubs from two pairs of ties. (Wormhole at foot of upper joint, upper joint weak.)
