Large archive of b&w glass lantern slides. Approx. 9.8x8.4 cm (3¾x3¼"). Many with paper edge protection and typescript captions. Many of the plates were published by Dr. Franz Stoedtner (1870-1946), a noted photographer and art historian active in turn of the century Germany. Franz Stoedtner studied art history at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin under Herman Grimm, where he received his doctorate with a monograph on Hans Holbein the Elder. Stoedtner published it in 1896, illustrated with his own reproductions. In 1895 he founded the Institute for Scientific Projection Dr. Franz Stoedtner, with the aim of offering photographic material for lectures and publications.Stoedtner was one of the most important pioneers of documentary photography, especially in the field of art history, but also in other fields. His picture publishing house was a model for the Bildarchiv Foto Marburg, founded by Richard Hamann in 1913.
