Arnoldus Montanus (1625?-1683) Atlas Japannensis being remarkable addresses by way of Embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces, to the Emperor of Japan , translated by John Ogilby London: Thomas Johnson for the author, 1670. 2° (418 x 253mm.). Title printed in red and black, additional engraved title, double-page map and 23 engraved folding or double-page plates. (Lacking first plate, map and plates 4 and 9 laid down, occasional light spotting, dampstaining and offsetting). Later calf, upper cover with central crowned armorial stamped in gilt (rubbed and scuffed, foot of spine torn). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Cox I, 325-6: "Exceedingly rare. The plates to this work represent a high-water mark in book illustrations of the 17th century. Apart from these, this book remains one of the most curious of the numerous works of travel in the Orient during the 17th century"; Lowndes 4, 1719; Wing M-2485.
