AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS. Eight finished pen & ink and acrylic drawings, c. 1956, app. 14 x 17" on tracing paper, with margins taped to black mattes, entitled "Cantinflas," "San Francisco #1," "San Francisco #2," the others untitled, being original costume designs for David Niven Cantinflas, and other supporting actors in the film. General warping to paper from acrylic application, tape remnants along margins, most sheets unglued from mattes, otherwise in excellent condition. Returning to Hollywood after a decade of success on Broadway, Miles White contributed his celebrated designs to three powerhouse musicals in the 1950s, beginning with Cecil B. deMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth," and followed by "There's No Business Like Show Business" and Mike Todd's "Around the World in Eighty Days." He would garner Oscar nominations for all three, and these production sketches for "Eighty Days" are illustrative of his creative contribution not simply to the clothing of the cast but also to delineating the cinematic milieu of Verne's classic tale. The multiple geographic locales gave White a wide rein for stylistic experimentation. In addition to Niven and Cantinflas, the film brought together a blockbuster cast including Shirley MacLaine, Noel Coward, Marlene Deitrich, John Gielgud, Buster Keaton and Frank Sinatra, among many others. The Film one Best Picture at the Academy Awards for 1956.
