.69 caliber. 42" round barrel secured by three flat, spring-retained barrel bands. SN: NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion altered smoothbore muzzleloading musket. Lock marked with {Spread-Winged Eagle} / US forward of the hammer and in three vertical lines at the tail SPRING / FIELD / 1841. Breech plug tang dated 1841 as well and left breech with typical V / P /{Eagle Head} proof marks. Counterpane with two visible but not legible cartouches. Buttplate tang marked US. Bottom of barrel and bottom of breech plug tang marked with the conversion mating code 15. Wood between tang and hammer marked 15 as well. This marking system was used by Springfield Arsenal in the conversion of US Model 1840 muskets from flint to percussion. Retains original brass blade front sight, both sling swivels and a correct style, full-length trumpet head ramrod with good threads. Overall a very nice example of an arsenal altered US Model 1840 musket, a type of gun that saw a lot of use on both sides during the first 12-18 months of the Civil War. Condition: Very good. Metal lightly cleaned to bright with some lightly scattered pitting. Markings remain clear in metal, weaker in wood. Mechanically functional, good smooth bore with moderate oxidation and some pitting. Stock with numerous scattered bumps, dings and mars.
