Catalogue for Warhol's First Solo Museum Exhibition
Warhol, Andy
Andy Warhol: Institute of Contemporary Art University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia: Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, 1965. First edition. 8vo. 38 leaves. Introduction by Samuel Adams Green. Text and plates printed on white, green, and silver colored paper. Illustrated with a portrait of Warhol on silver paper and 27 full or double-page color reproductions of his work. Original quarter black cloth over stifff illustrated wrappers, designed by Ben Birillo.
An exceptional copy of this rare and important catalogue for Andy Warhol's first-ever solo museum exhibition, held at the Institute of Contemporary Art, in Philadelphia, from October 8 to September 21, 1965. Published to accompany the exhibition, this fragile, and often worn volume, features full and double-page reproductions of some of Warhol's iconic Pop Art pieces, including his Campbell's Soup cans, Brillo Boxes, Coca Cola bottles, portraits of Marilyn Monroe Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, and Jackie Kennedy, as well as those from his darker Death and Disaster series, including Electric Chair, Race Riots, Car Crashes, and Suicides. The show was a wild success and helped propel Warhol to the pinnacle of art world celebrity, with so many visitors attending opening night that the artwork had to be removed for fear of them being damaged by the crowds. Warhol offered a characteristic response to the night's events, "It was fabulous; an art opening with no art!"
