Oil on canvas,18 1/2 x 23 3/4 in. (47.0 x 60.3 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, minor surface grime. N.B. Goodwin is best known as a painter of Boston street scenes and its waterfront from 1900 to 1921. Though he was a self-taught artist, he was encouraged to paint by Louis Kronberg and at one point shared a studio with him. (1) He worked en plein air on an easel in all seasons, often in the Boston's Back Bay neighborhoods. Goodwin typically worked directly on his support, without the use of underdrawing, and by the 1920s, his brushwork became more vigorous and loose.
