[Atlas - Antiquity] CELLARIUS, Christoph Notitia orbis antiqui, sive Geographia plenior, ab ortu rerum publicarum ad Constantinorum tempora orbis terrarum faciem declarans. Leipzig, J.F. Gleditsch, 1731-2 vol., 4to: front.-[14]-1088-[12]-20-970-[pp.; + engr. maps (light damp stains, paper gap in title 2nd vol., sl. browned, a few stains). Contemp. mottled calf, gilt-decor. spines with raised bands, spr. edges (endbands sl. worn, corners sl. bumped). Rare 3rd edition (1st publ. in Leipzig, of this early standard work on the geography of Classical Antiquity by the German classical scholar Cellarius (1638-1707). Although he was particularly credited with popularising the Ancient-Medieval-Modern division of history which was previously used by Leonardo Bruni and Flavio Biondo, this treatise on ancient geography made him the "Begründer des universitären Geographieunterrichts", the founder of geography as an academical discipline.
