Attributed to Charles Francisco Burney (1760-1848). Evelina, circa 1780-1800, oval watercolour with touches of black ink, on pale cream wove paper, depicting a young woman, seated, half-length, in fashionable dress wearing a bonnet tied under her chin, head slightly tilted and facing the viewer, arms folded and resting on a table, 275 x 234 mm ( 10.9 x 9.25 ins), period gilt frame (Qty: 1) Provenance: David Talbot-Rice (1903-1972); thence by descent. An imagined portrait of the innocent heroine of Fanny Burney's classic novel Evelina, or the History of a Young Lady's entrance into the World, first published in 1778. Fanny Burney's brother, the artist Charles Burney is known to have made three illustrations of scenes from his sister's novel which were exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year.
