Parts one to five (of 7) of the FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of Augustine's sermons in a contemporary English binding with contemporary Oxford provenance. Only 11 examples of bindings by the Octagonal Rose binder, active from 1489-96, have been recorded (Oldham, op.cit and Shrewsbury School Library Bindings , p.56; G. Pollard, "The Names of some English Fifteenth-century Binders," The Library 5th ser., 25, 1970, pp.193-218); all of these are in institutional collections. The majority of surviving copies of this edition contain only several of the seven parts, many containing only one or two parts as opposed to the five offered here. This and the fact that each part is a self-contained unit, prefaced by an individual title, a table of contents, and succeeded by sententiae , indicates that the parts were available separately and combined according to preference and pocket of the purchaser. On the full-page woodcut, see W. Weisbach Die Basler Buchillustration des XV. Jahrhunderts 1896. H *2008; GW 2920; BMC III, 756 (IB. 37380); Schreiber 3395; IDL 530; Goff A-1308.
