AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION. A collection of autograph letters and documents, 18th-19th Century, comprising: Fanny BURNEY (1752-1840). Autograph letter signed ('F.B.') to her father [Charles Burney], Mickleham, 16 September 1791, giving news of her sister Susanne after childbirth, and of the engaging behaviour of her children, 3 pages, 4to ; Hester Lynch THRALE (1741-1821, from 1784 Mrs Piozzi). Autograph letter signed ('H.L. Piozzi') to the Hon. Miss Elizabeth Blaquiere, n.p., 27 January 1804, teasing her correspondent about her failure to visit, 'There has been no Rain , but you see Hindrances spring up spontaneously: ... They will spring up & prevent the French from landing I hope & we shall get Time enough for the London Illuminations', one page, 4to , integral address leaf; Sir Walter SCOTT (1771-1832). Autograph letter signed ('Walter Scott') to an unidentified lord, n.d., referring to a book by his son-in-law [John Gibson Lockhart], half page, 8vo ; and others by FitzRoy SOMERSET, 1st Baron Raglan (two, of which one written at Brussels, 6 July 1815, only 18 days after losing his right arm at Waterloo), John FRANKLIN (Melbourne, 1843), GEORGE IV (as Prince of Wales, 1808), NAPOLEON III (1863), statesmen such as Charles James Fox, George Canning, Castlereagh (2), Liverpool, Peel, Nesselrode (2), Metternich, Disraeli and the 14th Earl of Derby, and figures from the arts such as Landseer, Bulwer Lytton (2), Harrison Ainsworth and others, altogether approximately 66 letters and documents, together with approx 13 envelopes and 5 cut signatures, pasted and tipped into the leaves of an album, 4to (380 x 300mm), velvet-covered wooden boards with painted armorial panels (backstrip missing). Provenance : Presumably compiled by Captain John William Clayton FRGS (1833-1913, his interlocking initials on lower cover); by descent to the late Michael Copeman (1920-2008).
