AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION. A collection of letters and documents, the majority English, 17th-19th centuries, with signatures of statesmen, politicians, authors, scientists and explorers. The signatories include: WRITERS including Mary SHELLEY (two letters to Mrs Gaskell, n.d., one mentioning Claire Clairmont and Caroline Norton), Robert Southey (in third person), Frances Trollope, Caroline Norton, Thomas Moore (1827) and James Hogg ('the Ettrick Shepherd', fragment of an autograph letter, 1832); POLITICAL FIGURES including Arthur, 1st Duke of WELLINGTON (1837, in the 3rd person), William IV (document signed, 1830), Daniel O'Connell (1836), William Frederick Duke of Gloucester (1834), Lord John Russell (1839), Edward, 1st Baron Hawke (1778) and W.E. Gladstone (1857, 1889); NATURALISTS including J.D. HOOKER (1878, on the classification of Ratnagiri), Lucy AUDUBON (1836, 'Mr Audubon is so thoroughly, so completely occupied in the large work he has in publication') and Charles Waterton (1854 'I consider myself a zoological physician'); and others including the sculptor Sir Francis Chantrey and Henry Hallam, altogether approximately 120 items ; with a small quantity of signed fragments, receipts and envelopes, including signatures of William WORDSWORTH Wilkie Collins, Charles Kean and General Gordon (with photograph with stamped signature).
