Autograph Letter Signed ("Bob" and "Robert Stroud-574"), in pencil, 2 pages recto and verso, 4to, Alcatraz, May 15, 1944, to Marie Stroud, on foolscap, light creasing and toning, stamped "R.R.B." at upper right of page 1. Convicted murderer Robert Stroud is one of the most fascinating figures in 20th century criminal history. Jailed first on a manslaughter charge, then convicted again for murdering a man in prison, Stroud turned his attention in 1920 to the care and study of canaries. Over the course of several years, Stroud conducted ground-breaking research in aviary diseases and published several books on the subject. Here he writes Marie Stroud giving news of the reception of his most recent publication: "I got the new brochure to day and it is swell. Mark says he has sent 500 to Canada, and they should bring in so good results. At the time he wrote he said it had not brung in much returns yet, but there had not been much time. I am pretty certain that it will produce good results in time. It is nicely set up. There are ten or twelve persons who have recommended the book, and three of them are scientists. One from Carnegie Institute, one from Vanderbilt U and one from Storrs Experimental Station Divisions of Genetics and animal disease. There is also a nice letter from the president of one of the large bird associations, and a lot of others, and they have some very nice things to say of the book."
