On the second day of Sherman's march into the Carolinas, Crews -- stationed along the Savannah River and awaiting the approach of the federal army -- writes to Captain B. A. Terrett, attached to the staff of William Wirt Allen: "I have the honor to inform you that one of my cousins left Lt. Col. Watts 2 miles this side of Brighton … The enemy had not made any demonstration this morn. This is the latest intelligence I have from him. Have instructed him to communicate with me frequently." Within a week, Sherman's army would overwhelm South Carolina forces and destroy the railroads to isolate Charleston, forcing the city's evacuation.
