AUTOGRAPH LETTERS. A collection of autograph letters by 19th-century political, military and cultural figures, including W.E. GLADSTONE (two, 1866, 'Is Lord Russell right in his apprehension?', and 1885, 'You will probably mention to him the position of Turkey in relation to the agreement'), Lord John RUSSELL [Earl Russell], the 5th Earl of ROSEBERY (1886), Joseph CHAMBERLAIN Charles Stewart PARNELL (1880), Field Marshal Earl ROBERTS (Meerut, 1889), Lord Curzon, Sir Henry Ponsonby, the 1st Viscount Halifax, Earl Granville and others, the majority addressed to Hugh Culling Eardley Childers, altogether approximately 61 letters and cards, with 47 envelopes, cut signatures and other fragments. Childers (1827-1896) held a number of Cabinet posts including Secretary of War, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary in the 1880s.
