Beschreibung:

(Autograph Material : American Presidents) 1 Piece. Autograph Letter Signed. Roosevelt, Theodore. New York, Nov. 15, 1885. 2 pages, 12mo; moderate vertical creases. Presumably to John Sergeant Wise, seemingly responding to Wise's defeat as candidate for the office of Governor of Virginia, "...Your defeat was an outrage - pure and simple. We were equally unfortunately here. I think Sherman... took the wrong tack in speaking of 'ex-rebles treason' ...I don't care a snap of my finger whether a man fought on one side or the other, so long as he wishes to see justice done for all his fellow citizens now..." Strong, clear contents and signature. Moderate vertical crease through the "T" of "Theodore," a faint vertical stain on the second page of the letter also covers the "e" of "Theodore" and the space between his given and family name. On black-bordered stationary. John Sergeant Wise (1846-1913), author, lawyer, public servant - U.S. Congressional Representative from Virginia, candidate for Governor of Virginia in 1885, son of Henry Alexander Wise, Confederate General, antebellum Governor of Virginia.
