Title: Autograph Note, signed, as publisher of the Federal Gazette and Philadelphia Daily Advertiser regarding an advertisement for a "Negro Boy" Author: Brown, Andrew Place: [Philadelphia] Publisher: Date: May 15, 1791 Description: Autograph Note, signed. 1 page plus integral address leaf. Approximately 8x6½". Newspaper publisher writes Francis Gurney, a prominent Philadelphia merchant, about an advertisement in his paper for the sale of a “negro boy”. Gurney had been a Colonel in Washington’s Army during the Revolutionary War and later saw military service again in suppressing the Whiskey Rebellion in Pennsylvania. A sad reminder that in the Revolutionary era, northern, as well as southern, gentlemen, were slave-owners. Lot Amendments Condition: Some light chipping; very good. Item number: 223516
