Autographs William Douglas Hamilton, Earl of Selkirk, 3rd Duke of Hamilton 1656 (7 August) petition of the "Numerous Creditors of ye confiscated persons in Scotland" to "his Highness the Lord Protector", Oliver Cromwell. Hamilton states "confiscated estates are not within a possbilitie to satisfie those vast debts ... Wherefore the petitioners most humbly implore your highnes just favour and tender compassion may be extended to soe many distressed people ... the petitioners being therby rendred capeable of a just and speedy releife ... and may have further cause to Blesse God. And Pray Etc." Signed "Hamilton" with filing endorsement on reverse. Fine. Photo William Douglas Earl of Selkirk, 3rd Duke of Hamilton (1634-1694), supporter of the Royalist cause and fined £1,000 by Cromwell in 1654 under the terms of the English Commonwealth's Act of Pardon and Grace to the People of Scotland. Hamilton married Anne, Duchess of Hamilton (1632-1716) who had had her estate confiscated by Cromwell for which the Duke spent many years trying to rebuild from their losses. It is understood that he did not do so until around 1660, just before he entered into political, public life.
