A collection of paperwork and photographs relating to Alcock and Brown, including six black and white photographs, one of the Vickers just before the start 14.6.1919, a newspaper cutting documenting the crew and a photocopied entry from Brackley's log book noting that 'Alcock started on Atlantic flight in Vickers "Vimy", weather conditions ideal' 14.6.1919 and a newspaper detailing the event dated 16.6.1919 Alcock & Brown were the first aviation pioneers to cross the Atlantic. The Atlantic stood as a constant obstacle to aviation pioneers and in times of peace all their efforts were concentrated on achieving this ultimate goal. On the 14th June 1919 Captain John Alcock, D.S.C. and his navigator Lieutenant Arthur W. Brown were the first to cross the Atlantic (much to the disappointment of Brackley and his crew). They flew the "Vickers-Vimy Rolls" a modified Great War Vickers Vimy bomber from St. John's, Newfoundland to Clifden, Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. Winston Churchill presented them with the Daily Mail prize for 'crossing the Atlantic in less than 72 consecutive hours', they were both knighted at Windsor Castle by King George V. (-)
