AVICENNA (980-1037). [ Canon medicinae .] Ex Gerardi Cremonensis versione, et Andreae Alpagi Bellunensis castigatione. A Joanne Costaeo et Joanne Paulo Mongio annotationibus iampridem illustratus . Venice: Junta, 1595. 2 volumes, 2 (330 x 240mm). Additional general title page with an engraved border and title in red and black, title to volume I in red and black, tables and indexes in volume II with a separate title page, large woodcut of the anatomy of the eye and 6 large woodcuts on 2 leaves showing dislocations, woodcut head-pieces and initials (E7 and E8 of vol. I slightly adhering together, affecting shoulder notes in lower gutter, 2G8-2L2 with worming at upper margin occasionally touching on text, M1-3 with large worm trace at outer blank margin, S4 of index slightly wormed at outer margin occasionally touching text, some browning in vol. II, damp-staining in both vols, more severe in vol. II.) Later 19th-century German mottled boards backed in calf (spines worn). Provenance : printed library slips in Greek, dated 1857 (pasted onto titles) and similar manuscript inscriptions (on front blanks). "The Canon of Avicenna "included all branches of science, and had a tremendous influence upon the fate of medicine in the Orient and among the European nations. Avicenna -- rightly Ibn Sina -- was the most celebrated Islamic physician of the XIth century, and may be said to have been an intellectual prodigy. It is perhaps possible that never before or since has there been so precocious, so facile and so wide an intelligence united with such extended and indefatigable energy" (Cumston History of Medicine , 1926, 1968 reprint, p. 192). As Edward Fitzgerald's biographer, A. M. Terhune notes ( The Life of Edward Fitzgerald , London, 1947, p. 218), there is evidence that Omar Khayym was an early student of the work. Choulant Handbuch p. 366; Dawson 331: "one of the best editions of the greatest work of Arabic medicine"; Durling 392; Parkinson & Lumb 107; Wellcome I, 580. (2)
