Axel Salto (b. Copenhagen 1889, d. Frederiksberg 1961) A tall, circular stoneware vase modelled in budded style. Decorated with Sung glaze with blue elements. Signed Salto, 1936. Royal Copenhagen. Designed 1936. H. 26.5 cm. Diam. 19 cm. Literature: “Axel Salto - Master of Stoneware”, CLAY - Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark, ill. in model register fig. 170, p. 174. In 1932, textile manufacturer C.C. Thomsen and his wife Mrs Esther Thomsen had their new home built at Bernsdorffsvej in Gentofte, north of Copenhagen. Arne Jacobsen one of the young, pioneering architects of the time, was commissioned to design the villa. The couple selected the furnishings with care, an immense sense of quality and a keen eye for emerging trends. The villa framed a home filled with furniture, paintings and decorative art created by names that posterity has since shown to be the prime movers of the Danish modernist art and design tradition. An interior characterised by reflecting the couple’s veneration of Danish architecture and decorative art, with a particular emphasis on Axel Salto’s ceramic works. These works were acquired from the 1930s through into the 1950s, and up until now they have remained in the family’s ownership. Eight Axel Salto stoneware works (catalogue number 636–643) with a common provenance and history are offered at the auction from this private family collection. This lot is subject to Artist's Royalty. Artist’s Royalty In accordance with Danish copyright law, an additional royalty fee is to be paid for the purchase of works by contemporary Danish artist and some international artists who are either still alive, or who died within the last 70 years. × Read more Condition Condition report available on request.
