Bahia, Brazil The titanium mineral rutile occurs as reddish-brown-to-black crystals, or as golden or silver needles included in quartz. Quartz with networks of whitish silvery rutile, like the needles in this specimen, is sometimes called “platinum quartz” in the jewelry trade. Many parallel secondary needles can be seen branching from several of the larger needles. This polished piece has its own history. Originally in the Hawthorneden collection (from Ontario, Canada), it was purchased by a recent owner as rough and then sent to Idar-Oberstein, Germany, for repolishing. However, at least one natural crystal face remains. Measures 7 ½ x 2 ¾ x 1 ¾ inches (19 x 7 x 4 cm)
