BAR, Jacques Charles (1740-1811)]. Recueil des ci-devant costumes religieux et militaires pour servir de suite aux cérémonies religieuses de tous las peuples du monde. Paris: Lamy, l'an 5 [1796-1797]. 4 volumes, 2° (499 x 307mm). Engraved throughout, half-titles, titles with hand-coloured vignettes and 355 (of 357) hand-coloured engraved and aquatint plates, one double-page, all by and after Bar. (Lacking plates numbered '27' and '152'.) Contemporary French green morocco gilt, covers with decorative border of six different roll-tools, spines in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, numbered in the fourth, the others with repeat pattern composed from various small tools, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (some scuffing to extremities, occasional small splits to joints). This work appears to be a selection from Bar's earlier larger work ( Recueil de tous les costumes des ordres religieux et militaires ), which was published in 6 volumes with text and a disputed number of plates that certainly exceeded 560. This copy is numbered throughout in an early manuscript hand. The numbering records the number of figures, rather than the number of plates, and therefore runs from 1 to 364 (with gaps at 27 and 152): this corresponds with the note at the front of the first volume and at the rear of the final volume. This selection is unrecorded in the standard bibliographies, but for the earlier work see Brunet I,642; Cohen/de Ricci 111; Colas 209; Lipperheide Od5; sold not subject to return. (4)
