BATMAN No. 35 Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: Detective Comics, Inc.] Date Published: June-July, 1946 Description: CGC certified: Good (2.0). Off-white to white pages. Grader notes: "Re-attached with tape cover; tape cover; tape interior; tape spine; creasing to cover; spine stress lines to cover." Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 172 graded copies (155 Universal, 2 Qualified, 15 Restored). GPAnalysis: A 2.0 sold for $328 in 2/22. Credits: Cover: Dick Sprang. Scripts: Bill Finger, Phil Berube. Art: Bob Kane, Paul Cooper, Phil Berube, Dick Sprang (?), Ray Burnley (inks). Overstreet: "Catwoman story (in new costume w/o cat head mask)." Bat-cyclopedia: "In June-July 1946 Batman and Robin match wits with the CATWOMAN; meet MURRAY WILSON HART, 'master showman and specialist in the spectacular'; and lend a helping hand to BIG ED CONROY." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, p. 119. Details: Catwoman escapes prison and attempts to hire some henchmen, but Gotham's criminals won't work with her because, as one crook puts it, "the BATMAN always stops you cold!" Catwoman convinces the superstitious criminals that she's got nine lives by faking her death a few times, then hires the impressed crooks and goes on a crime spree. The story ends when, trying to outrun the Dynamic Duo, Catwoman's vehicle plunges off a cliff into the sea. The text suggests that Catwoman's really dead this time, but she returns just four issues later. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com.
