Beschreibung:

Exceptional inscription on the front blank endpaper of a first edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Detached leaf from a copy of the first edition, second issue. (205 x 150 mm). Framed. Condition : yellowed, slight chipping to edges. Few inscribed copies of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Chicago: George M. Hill Co., 1900) have survived. For a little boy he did not know, Baum composed an unusually lengthy statement--more a letter than a mere inscription. He reiterated the theme of the Great American Fairy Tale with references to the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion: “ My compliments to Master George Read, to whom I understand this book is to be presented by my good friend Mrs. Lake. I hope he will acquire more brains than the Scarecrow, more heart than the Tin Woodman, and more courage than the Cowardly Lion. Still, if he but equals their attainments I feel sure he will win the love and admiration of his fellows. For, if you stop to think of it, there was much wisdom in the Scarecrow, much tenderness in the Tin Woodman, and much real courage in the Lion. And perhaps that was the reason they all wanted more of those admirable qualities. L. Frank Baum Macatawa Park, Michigan, September Eleventh 1902. ” Although neither Mrs. Lake nor Master George Read has been identified, it can be surmised that Baum met the woman while vacationing at his summer cottage “The Sign of the Goose.” [With:] The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Chicago: George M. Hill, [1900]. 8vo. Original green cloth, stamped in colors. Housed in light green cloth clamshell. Condition : covers soiled, spine detached, loss of title page, some text leaves and illustrations. Though damaged, this copy is a first edition example from which the above inscription originates.
