BECKETT, Samuel Barclay (1906-1989) and Avigdor ARIKHA (b. 1929, artist). The North . London: Rampant Lions Press for The Enitharmon Press, 1972. 2° (385 x 292mm). Title printed in light green and black. Etched frontispiece and 2 plates by and after Arikha printed by Studio Prints and signed in pencil beneath each image by the artist, retaining tissue guards. Loose as issued in original paper sleeve with title in blind on upper panel within original cloth chemise titled on spine and upper panel and slipcase. Provenance : Emmanuel Moses (b. 1959). FIRST EDITION, NO. 13 OF 137 COPIES SIGNED ON THE COLOPHON BY BECKETT AND BY ARIKHA BENEATH THE ETCHINGS. The text of The North comprises the penultimate paragraph of The Lost Ones (London: 1972), and 'contains minor variants from the full edition in English' (Lake, Eichhorn and Leach); this edition is illustrated by Beckett's close friend the Israeli artist Arikha, who illustrated a number of Beckett's works including this and the following lot. This copy is an ASSOCIATION COPY from the library of the poet and translator Emmanuel Moses, who translated How it Was: A Memoir of Samuel Beckett by Arikha's wife Anne Atik, into French as Comment c'était: souvenirs sur Samuel Beckett (Paris: Éditions de l'Olivier, 2003).
