Bedford was one of the most accomplished English bookbinders of his time; his style was entirely retrospective, inspired by the great French binders of the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The 1544 Dante, bound "in the Grolier style," which he considered his masterpiece and had wanted to be buried with him, realized £49.
